The Common Room

The Common Room is a very unique venue right in the middle of Newcastle with a capacity of 150 guests. Packed with heritage, it provides a glorious backdrop to weddings, social events like networking receptions, dinner-dances and parties, and to business meetings and events of all shapes and sizes from seminars, board meetings, team building and training days through to conferences, awards ceremonies, product launches and exhibitions.

Once home to The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, The Common Room has 6 incredible spaces for hire, or you can book the entire venue to host events for 325 people over 3 floors. The biggest room is the Wood Hall, a beautiful space graced with Victorian architecture including a phenomenal glass vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows and a gorgeous decorative cast iron spiral staircase; it holds 150 delegates in theatre style or for cocktails, 120 dining and 72 in cabaret arrangement.

The Edwardian Lecture Theatre with its rich mahogany panelling sets the scene for conferences and presentations for 100 in fixed tiered seating. The Arbitration Room is very atmospheric with cathedral windows and original features and accommodates 60 standing or 70 sat in theatre style; The Stephenson Room also holds similar numbers. For smaller meetings or break outs the Map Room can host a maximum of 40 people and the Meeting Room, 30.

All rooms have superfast wifi and cutting-edge AV technology with live streaming available. The Common Room has a licenced bar and offers catering for all events from gala dinners to working lunches and buffets. There’s a well-seasoned team to help you pull off a hugely successful event. Within a few minutes’ walk you’ll find car parks, the train station, and hotels for your overnight guests.
