Doncaster
As one of South Yorkshire’s largest market towns, Doncaster has long been a destination for visitors from all over the UK. Situated close the River Don, it is home to the iconic Doncaster Minster with its tall tower and magnificent stained glass windows. Thought to be an early Roman or Medieval settlement, the town’s riverside location has been key throughout its history. It is now a thriving, large town with a population that has expanded significantly over the years.
In Doncaster town centre there are plenty of fabulous shopping areas and malls – including the beautifully refurbished Corn Exchange, a grand Victorian shopping centre originally built in the 1900s. This is joined by Frenchgate, Lakeside Village and Wheatley Retail Park. Meanwhile the famous Doncaster market boasts hundreds of vibrant stalls indoors and outdoors – the perfect activity for a rainy day. For history buffs Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery provides an opportunity to learn about the area’s rich industrial heritage, whilst South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum celebrates aviation history from around the world. For sports fans a visit to the town’s football ground Doncaster Rovers could be on the cards.
Away from the town centre there’s also much to do. Yorkshire Wildlife Park brings exciting and exotic species from all over the globe to the region, whilst visitors at Potteric Carr Nature Reserve can get to grips with South Yorkshire’s native wildlife. Place your bets at Doncaster Races, or take in the stunning scenery at Brodsworth Hall or Conisbrough Castle.
As it is just 17 miles from neighbouring Sheffield, Doncaster has fantastic transport links and is easily reached via road and rail.
