The University of Sheffield is one of the top five in the UK – with the presence of students giving rise to excellent local amenities and plenty of trendy shops, bars and restaurants. Shoppers are served by the enormous Meadowhall Shopping Centre on the outskirts of the city as well as Orchard Square in the centre. Originally Sheffield was a hive of manufacturing and mining activity thanks to the Industrial Revolution – and remnants of this prosperous era are evident throughout the city centre today. It is also known as the ‘steel city’ thanks to its heritage and many manufacturers still forge the metal today making cutlery and related items. Grand buildings such as Sheffield Cathedral, Town Hall, Sheaf Brewery and several remaining mills have now been converted and restored to their former glory, adding character and historical style. The city is also famous for its football teams Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday – with tours available of their grounds. It’s also home to the oldest football club in the world – Sheffield FC.
